Hey guys, this is my first post here. I'm a freelance engineer with a degree in Music Technology. Up until now, every band I've recorded have had "normal" vocalists who just sing.... or try to sing. Well I just got hired by a thrash-punk band to produce their EP. After sitting in on the band's practices I've learned that their singer screams/shouts. What should I use to record the vox? Is the screaming too much for a condenser? I've got a Rode NT1 and a modded Apex 460 as far of large diaphragm condensers go, and a few different dynamics, including SM57s, 58s, and OM2s and OM7s. What are your guys' experiences?

I've done it with LDC's but my favorite mic for that is a Shure SM7 (not the sm57). You could also use an RE20 if you have one lying around.

You won't break the condenser mics by screaming into them, just back him up 5 or 6 inches and put a pop screen on. A compressor will be a good idea as well.

Short of the above recommendations, I'd suggest a 12 gauge shotgun with either slaughter gauge or solid shot.............and feel free to tell the singer of my comment ;)
