I am looking to record roots music. It will just be my vocals and a guitar. I have gotten so many different opinions. For a while I was stuck on recording it in stereo with the v67g for vox through the dmp3 and ther mxl 603 through the vtb1. Eventually I will add banjo and harmoica to some songs. But recentally some folks mentioned it may be more true to the music to record both at the same time with one mic (that is vocals and guitar).

I was wondering what your thoughts on a setup for this are. I want to stay true to the music but still produce a quality recording. Do you think I should go with the two mics and different preamps? Or with one mic to record both sources? If you do think it would be wise to record through one mic which of the preamps would be good for that or would you suggest another in the $300 or lower level? Do you think I will need a compressor? I have heard good things about the fmr really nice compressor.

Listen to some of my tunes at http://www.evangordon.com/sounds.php
"Che Guevara T-Shirt" was recorded with a single Large Diaghram Condender (Soundelux U97) in a single take, using my Larrivee OM03R and my mediocre vocals. I think it sounds good (in a rootsy way!). Honestly, the best way is to try it and see what it sounds like for your songs/in your environment/with your voice/instruments.
