You're gonna need a mic-pre or a mixer with a built-in mic-pre, or else you aren't gonna get any sound whatsoever. Now I shall pimp M-Audio ^_^. The audio Buddy is a good pre on a budget. Check out musiciansfriend or samash or something for prices. After that, all you'll need for a decent recording will be skill.

N-Track will not be the limiting factor in your recording quality; it's the stuff going up and into the computer.....

Do yourself a favor and go to amazon.com then type "Home Recording" into the search bar. Get a good beginners guide like "Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies" (its really a good beginner book) before you start dropping serious hard-earned cash.

for years i recorded with an SM57, a $60 berhinger mixer and N-track. If you take your time and are smart with your EQ, you can get a pretty good sound.

I have a Neumann and a Soundelux mic, a Great River Pre, some nice guitars (a '56 Martin, a Santa Cruz, Taylor, among others) and I still use N-Track :)
I have a Delta 44 for my PC interface, and I use alot of Waves plug-ins as well.
