A friend and I have been recording and both audio and MIDI in Home Studio 2004, and are experiencing some problems.

As soon as we record MIDI tracks, any subsequent audio recordings include both the new audio and *all* of the MIDI tracks.

It appears that we are recording (converting?) MIDI to audio. We have checked the HS 2004 manual (p. 52) re. converting MIDI to audio, but cannot figure out how to stop this from happening.

We are using an M-Audio 2496 card with a Korg N5 MIDI keyboard, and are recording vocal and guitar audio tracks.

Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Geert, in Toronto.

Sounds like you have the new audio track set up in HS 2004 to record a monitor channel, not just the single sound card input.

I don't know the M-Audio card's software so can't advise directly, but is there an option in there to change virtual patch-bay routing or something like that?

This isn't a MIDI - audio automatic conversion issue, (because there's no such thing), rather your signal routing is getting messed up somewhere.

Hi Qwerty,
Thanks very much for this; I had guessed that this might be a routing/bussing problem, but learning the software is a steep learning curve for me, so I very much appreciate the advice.

Will report back.

Thanks,

Geert.

Are you using an external mixer or is this all in the box?

We're using an external mixer (Behringer - can't remember which model, but I can find out).

In that case, I would guess that you need to be playing with the little buttons which say whether stuff is sent to the master, tape or headphone bus. It sounds like you have the output of the speakers being resent to the sound card's input. You would need the track you are attempting to record set to something unique and all the others set to the headphone bus.

Have a play and let us know where ya get.

Ciao,
