Hi All,

My first post here. I have a Tascam 424 that used to work fine. It's been sitting for about a year and I went to do some recording and am now having a problem. While recording, everything sounds fine. When playing back what was just recorded, the sound drops in and out. I tried a few different tapes and they all do the same thing. I tried some prerecorded tapes and they are fine. I'm guessing my problem is with the recording heads. Any advice on where to look?

Thanks, AL.

1st thing to try would be cleaning the playback and recording heads. The manual recommends doing this at the end of every recording session as far as I remember.

Also you could read the thread called "Maintenance of my Porta 02 MkII" which covers similar ground.

Thanks for the reply. I think I fixed it. I think the input selector swithc was dirty and the signal was fading between input and tape. I disassemble the whole unit and cleaned all the pots and switches. Seems to be working for now.

Thanks, Al.
