Hi.
I have Cakewalk Music Creator 2003 and a SB Live Soundcard (v 5.1). I run my Line 6 POD 2.0 and Vox TL into the SB card thru the mic input. Of course, I have to turn the output sound so low(to prevent distortion), I can't hear myself play! I know I'm supposed to be using the line level input of the souncard but when I do that, no signal comes thru at all (VU meter reads nada). Help! What am I doing wrong. Music Creator only lets you choose mono or stereo inputs for the soundcard configuration;no mention is made a line vs mic input..
thanks!

I'm not familiar with CakewalkMC2003 but .... My thoughts would be .... navigate to Start/All Programs/Creative/ Soundblaster Live ... then launch the creative surround mixer. At the far right of the mixer, above the Record fader there is a click-able icon that shows what input is active for recording. If it is showing an icon of a mic ... click the mic. In the drop down menu click on Line In. Line In will now be the enabled input and that fader will adjust the input level.
Also note: I've mentioned this in several other posts and you may already know. That soundcard runs natively at 48kHz sample rate. Having your recording software set to anything other than that will force the Live card to re-sample on the fly, possibly causing undesirable artifacts in the recording and playback.

Hope this helps

Problem #1: Do NOT use the Mic input. Use the line-in input.

That's what's causing your distortion. The mic input is ONLY meant to be used by those little stick mics for gaming.

Problem #2: Save up $100-150 and get a real 24-bit soundcard. Your sound will improve 500%.

crankz1's tip should get you set straight.

I've long suspected that the SB Live has the Line Out disabled for recording by default when it is installed, for some reason... not that I've ever verified that definitively, but I noticed it with my own when I first got it, and there have been so many posts like this in the past four years...

AMEN!!! :D

I USED to own a SB Live! card, so I know your pain. D@mn fine gaming card, but not good for audio recording. Believe me, a new prosumer grade audio-recording-friendly sound card will be worth every penny you spend on it... ;)

OK thanks for all the help...Now. Any reccomendations for a 24 bit soundcard(24 bit for both recording and playback) for under $150.00?
Thanks again!

You might be able to get that line input working. You may just need to select the line input in control panel.

Click start, control panel.
Click sounds and audio devices
Click on the audio tab
Under sound recording click volume
Select line in and adjust the volume for whatever you have hooked up. Keep the max signal below 0 db no mattter what. Probably wanna have cakewalk open with a track armed to test the input signal...

Then go back to the regular mixer and adjust how loud your input is reletive you the mix your playing to:

Click start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, volume control. When you adjust the line volume here, it doesn't change the recording input volume, just how loud it comes out of the speakers or headphones...
