Recording on the Vf-160

My band finally got the time to record our first tune with the fostex vf-160 and computer, basically everything was done seperately, Used Vegas Video/Soundforge to edit each track. Check it out at

Well Tremors, the download has taken over an hour so far and it's finally up to 91%. LOL Ah, the 56 k Modem. Anyway, I noticed the pics taken at The Coffee Pot last year. You guys from the Roanoke area?

Yeah Man.....Also anyone had issues with saving to a jaz drive then not being able to open the wavs???
 
This is a cool tune, Bro. Like the groove and the guitars Rawk, man. Vox are good too!

How much compression are you running on the drums? They sound over compressed and I think I'm hearing the compressor working which means something there is very overcompressed. I converted it to wave and imported it to n-Track and put a Peak Limiter on the output set to prevent clipping. I ran it up 9db to bring the volume up some.

Overall, the mix is good but it's not anywhere near loud enough.

Wonder what would be the best way to bring up the Vol without clipping in soundforge?
 
Kick ass tune dude.....the volume is way low though.... Its got that early ZZ Top feel to it.... it Definitely rocks....

Thanks for the Info..Yes I have the CDR..but I have alot of material....so I needed the gig of space per disk.

I have no problems at all....works like a charm.

What kind of jaz drive do you have?
 
Its the standard 1 GB Jaz..formatted with FAT It saves fine then when i try to open the way in windows it says "Invalid Media Format" Now when i burn to the IDE it works fine....It also copies into windows fine but just wont read....


Any help?

Did you Format the disk from your Fostex?Are you saving the files to your Jaz drive as "wav" and not "FDMS"?

GO to page 102 of your VF-160 manual......step by step instructions on saving to an SCSI device.(Im sure you've already read it but....)


Are you loading files onto your jaz as backups or as files to be imported into your computer for editing on a software program?
 
1) Formatted Jaz Disk with Computer Using FAT.

2) Doing Backup to SCSI using WAV file.

3) After further research it looks like it saving the data but not in PCM-Wave Format. (saves as .wav but has no properties about its bitrate ect.)

4) Also Trying to Load any one of the WAV files into Media Player 9.

Format the disk from your Fostex and start over.

Follow the step-by-step instructions on page 102 of your manual.

If it's not saving in wav it must be FDMS format......have you seen the 2 options of "fdms" and "wav" format to choose from in the menu?

How are you importing your files into your computer?Do you have an internal Jaz or are you hooking the external one up to the computer after you do the data dump from the VF?
 
Yes, I hook the Jaz up to my computer Using ADaptec 2930 Card and It works fine I can see the actual wav files on the jaz...they have th icon for windows media but they have NO properties...

Weird...

I do see the FD3MS and WAV on menu..I pick WAV

Weird indeed.LOL....try posting over at the VF-16/160 wesbite.There's usually somebody over there that can answer VF related questions.It's located here.
 
P.s. I would still try formatting the disk from the Fostex instead of the computer.Give that a try before you do anything else...also,have you tried to load these files back into the Vf 160 to see if the VF recognizes the files was wav/?
 
Never Mind..I have Version 1.13 Of the Fostex OS, 1.14 addresses this problem....I hate fostex and their support..

You can download the update at http://www.vf16.com (middle ways down the right hand side of the page)


Just load the update file on your jaz and hook it up to your VF and boot the Jaz and Vf at the same time.....it will update automatically without a hitch..takes about 30 seconds....no loss of data and you dont have to reformat....just updates and everything on your Vf hardrive stays in place.

The Worm......Nice work. Kickin song. I love it!!

Tell us more about how you did it?
Was it played live or overdub?
Amps and mics used?
Vocal processing? - Is there two singers?
How many mics on the drums?
How many tracks?

Yeah it is a little low in volume, but a little clockwise motion on the preamp vol ctrl solves the problem. Compared to Macabees Headlong blues, it sounds a lot more even, smooth and easier on the ears.

Macabees Whirlwind is a nice recording to. Good ballance, nice seperation between instruments. Perhaps a little reverb on the snare would give it more "room" sound.

the song is pretty cool it's a good rock/blues song i only have a problem with the drums are a bit... well they don't kick real much maybe too soft in the mix
