Hey, I just got the MR8 and I have all the basic functions down. There's one problem though, when we record a guitar with distortion (using a distortion petal, we've tried three different kinds) it sounds like utter crap. There is a lot of noise and it doesn't sound clean at all. It almost sounds like there is too much distortion (tried turning down the petals, amps etc... nothing worked). We tried hooking the guitar and petal directly to the MR8 without going through an amp, but we get the same results. Can anybody give me some tips on recording a guitar with distortion? Your help is greatly appreciated.

There is an input switch on the back right below the input A. It has 3 different positions. Int mic, Guitar, and mic/line in. You might not have it in the guitar position. I don't know anything else except maybe you got the guitar distortion on the MR-8 turned up while trying to use an external distortion device?
If this does not help some of the guitar dudes will be on soon and can help.

No, that's not it. I had it on guitar when recording, it's really pissing me off. I want to get some stuff recorded, but not if it sounds crappy :(

It could be that the distortion pedal is boosting the signal so much that you're actually clipping. Check the meters in the display and see what's happening. It's possible to clip and the led doesn't light at the input.

Well, that's not it either, the meter remains well below the 0 mark. :(

What I would do

I am just giving my opinion on what I do to record.
I set up my amp and guitar the way I want it to sound, and set the MR-8 for a Ext, Mike and mike the amp with a SM-58. It is fool proof. It works everytime for me!
Hope that helped.

I'll throw this out. it may be possible that the distortion pedal simply does not sound good enough to be recorded direct. Do you have a POD or J-station?

I don't know where it went? Seems like a year ago it was 1984 and I was just starting to college (which I didn't finish). If I knew then what I know now I would've finished. Anyway, glad to see I'm not the only senior citizen on this board.

Hey thanks a lot for the suggestion, I put a mic next to the amp and through the PA system and it worked A LOT better than plugging the guitar directly into the MR8. Thanks again! :D

You guys are the same age as my wife........here all this time I thought I had a young wife! Wait till she hears that she's a senior citizen.

-nada,
Although the hype about the MR8 boasts a lot of stuff, a lot of that is for those who mostly go for the portability of the unit.......Internal mic, amp sims, mic sims, for the most part fall into the same category as direct plug-in. Just hard to get the sound that pleases the ear. Try using a mixer or a pre, or both. Keep experimenting with the way you record, pan, counter pan etc. I'm always finding little things that help the overall sound of the recordings I make....believe me, I need all the help I can get.
