i have a presonus firepod and an assortment of mics and I am trying to get the best sound possible. Am I using the right mics on the right drums?

I have an Audix K6 - Kick drum
Shure SM57 - im usings these on snare, rack tom, and floor tom

pair of CAD GXL 1200's for overheads (Im getting terrible bleed into these of my kick, it is overpowering my cymbals)

CAD Equitek E 200 as my room mic

Are these ok for getting a decent recording? Im getting tons of bleed in the overheads that overpowers the cymbals.

Any suggestions on what to try? I am using Cubase SX 2.0

thanks!

well those mics will be fine. I have used those overheads and they are kind of cheap, but they work all right. I know that they pick up a lot. I once tried to record vocals with them and you could hear people whispering upstairs. It was nuts!!! :D To solve the problem with the kick I would try to isolate it as much as possible. Try putting some blankets over it. You will have some kick in the overheads unless you go to extreme measures. The drums, tuning, room, and mic placement also are key factors here, so no one can really tell you whether or not you will get a good sound from this. How are you micing the overheads?

Nice article, i keep hearing more and more about the earthworks mics, i might have to invest in one to try it out.

i like the kickpad. the drum mic pac they've got going now, with 3 mics sounds good in a good room. if you're situation is anything like mine, you don't have a great live room (ie. my living room) so the room is too present, and the tracks end up sounding better if i minimize the room as much as possible.

you can contact earthworks and they'll send you a sample cd.
