recording my band this weekend

we are recording a 3 song this weekend...

I'm using a fostex mr-8, a 16 channel sunn mixer, and several dynamic mics, and condensers.

I was wanting to know.. whats the best way we could use 3=4 mics on drums.. into 2 stereo channels.. because the mr8 can't handle more than 2 sim. recordings.

Also.. when micing the guitar amps.. should we use condenser or dynamic?
 
If you have a 16 channel mixer then you can use 16 mics
at the same time if you want:D . just run from the stereo outs
on the mixer into the mr8.

mic the kick drum two overhead mics above the drums, one between the toms, all dynamic(if the whole band is playing you want to isolate the parts, and the condensor mics will pick up the whole thing). dynamic ifront of guitar amps, di or mic the bass amp, one mic for eac vocal. get a good mix through the headphone of your mixer. use the mixer out or tape out or aug out to go to the mr 8 with the stereo cord, do all panning on the mixer, and record stereo on the mr 8

use a condensor mic out in the room or off stage to pic up the whole band and maybe add to the mix, see how it sounds....

are you recording a performance at a bar or something?, this can be hard to get a good mix for the recording, and a good mix in the room , the audience should come first....

we are tracking everything seperately...

I just wanted to see what mics would do the best job for which app.. since I have both types. I was thinking of using the modified spacing technique.

I plan to have the drums recorded first with a scratch guitar or bass track. we are gonna track the drums to all 3 songs, before we do any other tracks.

also...

when doing panning and such we have 3 guitarists.. one plays mainly rhythmn, one plays the picky melody parts, and one plays somewhat rhytmn but with more octave chord stuff. How would I pan those? who should be in the center and who should be in the left and right?

sorry i got the impresion you where recording live at a show or something... (dhooo)

if thats the case use the condensor mics for overheads on the drums

id try worrying more about the eq on the guitars, notching out a place for each, since there is no eq on the mr 8 use the channel strips or better yet an outboard 31 band and a compressor, then experiment with the panning on them

even when tracking seperatly i like to use one of the condensors back further in the room on one channel and mix that in to get more of the natural room sound also....
 
Recording the guitars direct is another option. That way zero background noise comes in to play.

I recently did some recording for a local Christian band. We did drums and vocals with mics and all else direct.

i like to go direct too(im a bass player) but you know some of those darn guitar players, always looking for that tone through their marshal stacks ....hahahahah
 
In my case we recorded the guitars and drums in a single take using a different 8 track recorder. We had to go direct for the guitars to avoid any spill over into the drum mics.

Each instrument went to a separate track, which offered more options during the mix down phase.

my buddie has one of those things, i remember him buying it back in the earlie eighties i think. you know that thing still works and he uses it kind of regurlar too.....cool a

Hey any of u guys ever heard of shure vocal master?

I saw a pair at a thrift shop for 100.00 they were prolly 6 feet tall.. and each had 2 10" and 4 6" speakers in em.

never seen the speakers, but our singer has one of those mixers, we still use it to add a third monitor mix....

its built like a tank...ill bet the speakers are too
 
i have a vf 80 and when i tracked my band i had a seperate mixer 2 mics in stereo for drums 2 mics in stereo for guitar and di/mic the bass
and i tracked vocals seperaly
it sounded great even though it was a cheap setup

panning guitars

I'd put the rythmn center and split the other 2 left and right at 9 and 3 o' clock. That's where I'd start anyway. Seems the picking and the melodic stuff would clash if put together. Guitars it seems to me produce high end gain and getting multiple guitars to be prominent, heard individually in the mix, and blend well in the mix is tricky but not impossible. Good luck Pj
