Recording midi & DXi to Sonar

Paul881, you definitely need a midi controller. The synth's on-screen k/board has nothing to do with midi, that's why you can't record it. It's function - auditioning sounds. It's amazing that it took so many posts to find this simple answer.

Hey bamboo - he is talking about a virtual midi controller, not the notes on the left hand side of the piano roll view

Hey Bamboo, I think you have given me the correct answer. I was maybe expecting the on screen synth keyboard to act like the Virtual Piano....and of course it doesn't.

I get my midi controller next week, can't wait:D Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.

Sorry to resurect this old thread but I found out how I can record using synths and soundfonts using my keyboard and/or my qwerty k/board:D

This is how I did it:
I set my Audio track input to stereo input from my soundcard and the output as per my soundcard.

In the audio track fx I chose Virtual Sampler. (superb sampler tool) but any synth will do.

In an adjacent midi track, I select the output to be "Virtual sampler".

So far so good. I then play the on screen Virtual sampler keyboard loaded with my selected soundfonts and can then hear the loaded soundfonts playing okay. The level meters move as I play in the selected audio track set up for the synth.

I then set the audio track to record and away I go. Result? One recorded synth on an audio track.

The key to it all was setting the audio track input to my soundcard (I was following some misleading advice in Sonar Help file which told me to select No Input:mad: ) And the other critical step was........roll of drums please.....setting up the damn microsoft sound mixer correctly:rolleyes:

Anyway, so I can now record to audio on my laptop using any of my soundfonts and any of my synths with or without a midi controller being attached.:D
