I'm extremely new when it comes to recording. However I have Cool Edit Pro (I just posted this in the Cool Edit pro forum too), and the Samson USB CO1U Condenser microphone.

My main problems are with too much frame noise from the vibraphone (maybe I just need to oil the pedal a little) and then the bass sound on the marimba is just deafening. Anything I can do for that?

Just experiment with positioning. I tend to record stereo but you could just placed the mic closer to the mid-high range on the marimba. As far as frame nosie, that's like squeeky pedals; you've gotta take care of them. There's no "fix it in the mix deal." All sounds will be recorded. If it doesn't sound good to your ear, it's not gonna get better once recorded.*

*Sometimes, this is possible, but for this situation, not applicable.
