I'm trying to record from a turntable to my computer. I have an RCA stereo cable to 1/8" cable connected from the turntable to the line in of my soundcard (soundblaster live). But, it's not working. Do I have to have the turntable hooked up to an amp, then hook the amp up to the computer? Thanks for the help.

You mostly likely need a phono preamp to convert the turntable's RIAA-modified phono signal to standard line-level.......

Many places carry these little boxes (even Radio Shack!) for $20 or $30 bucks....

Bruce is right. You need either to use your stereo tuner (assumming it has a phono input. I've seen some newer units that don't include one) as an RIAA pre amp and send line level to your computer or a stand alone unit.

for my 2 cents worth,
i just run my 3 turntables throigh my dj mixer & then from there straight to my soundcard
an amp will also do the job though:)

hmmm... $30 RIAA preamp, or a $300++ DJ mixer that already has the RIAA preamps built-in....

I'm not sure you're suggesting the most cost-effective solution here!
