Welcome to the BBS!

Find a great room to play in and get the sound right before you record it. Garbage in = garbage out. Can't stress that too much. Once you have it right then be as invisible as you can with the recording process.

Four track tape machines have their uses but they also limit many things that you can do. Try to get everything (instruments, vocals, drums etc...) to sound as good as possible in the room before you hit the record button. Your choice of mics and where you place them will make a lot of difference in how things will sound recorded. Experiment with different mics and placements to find what captures sounds best. Keep the tape heads clean and always record on the highest (fastest) tape speed setting.
