Should a comp's gate for drumsbe used if you're recording a mic'd kit with singers and mic'd amps!? Or should you record the ENTIRE band dry and gate during mixdown!!??

Unless you really really really know the drummers dynamics and style, I'd wait till mix down. why? Drummer are known to play differently from sound check to performance. Why do you want to gate anyway? If it's meant to be a live album or what not, let it be live!

I am tracking in Digi001. I recorded 6 tracks of drums... kick, snare, combined the toms to one track, 2 overheads, and high hat. After getting it down, I tried messing with the gates on the mics. It really takes away the liveliness. You need a little bleed from mic to mic to get a good sound. When put into a mix, you don't hear the things that bug you, but the kit sounds natural. Don't do it! I would only use a mute in the real quiet places but otherwise leave it untouched.

Sounds like what you need is better isolation. I recorded a live gig and used good isolation techniques and had a tremendous drum sound. The drum volumes were so much higher than the bleed that it wasn't an issue.
