I'm recording a horn section next week - trombone, trumpet and tenor sax.

I have a stereo pair of Cascade Fatheads, an additional fathead, the DR-2 and the Vin-Jet (all ribbons made by cascade.)

I was thinking of putting mics up in front of each instrument (not too close, of course) and also putting up the stereo pair in the Blumlein config and see what sounds best, the stereo pair or the individual mics.

Am I wasting my time/disk space individually micing? Won't the trumpet bleed into the other mics too much? Don't really know what I'm doing with these mics. They're new and I've never worked with them before.

I don't have time to experiment during the session so any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks.

It depends on the sound you want, the type of room it's in, what the horns are playing, etc. Good recordings have been made with both a stereo pair on horns and each one mic'd individually. It's hard to tell without more info on the situation.

so much depends on the room here... i generaly prefer an overall approach rather than individual micing... if they are any good at all they will mix themselves naturally.... bluemlein ribbons might sound nice.... what kinda track is it???

funk/rock tracks. they are good players. the room is not good though. small, dead, low ceilings.

for blumlein and M/S and such to work requires a room open enough to let the sound develope.... this aint it.... so your probably better with spot micing...

thanks

yea, that's what i thought. thank you for responding.
