I recently bought an M-Audio Fast Track USB audio Interface. It works great using the effects software supplied with it but when I try to record guitar I only get sound out of the right channel. It seems the input only puts sound out of the right channel. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance

You need to tell your software to record a mono channel for the guitar. That way you will have a pan control.
guitar is a mono instrument so it will only take up one side of a stereo channel.

From zZSounds:
"Mono switch sends input signal equally to left and right channels"

Sounds like you need to engage the mono switch to send it to both left and right. I don't know much about this interface, but it looks like it will not record in stereo unless you are using both the line-in and the mic-in simultaneously (in which case, one will go to the left and the other to the right; or in mono, both would go to the middle).

You can record a guitar in stereo, but in most cases, why would you want to? It doesn't really produce a stereo image unless you're using some stereo effects while tracking that you want to capture. Or, maybe if you're recording an acoustic guitar and have it double-mic'd, like with 1 near the soundhole and one up by the neck. Then, you could send the mic signals to different tracks and pan them a little L and R of center if you were trying to create a really up close (like sitting right in front of the guitarist) kind of feel or if you wanted to achieve some other effect makes your ears happy. :) Otherwise, in most contexts, a guitar would be a mono signal.

Plus you have pan control, like Farview is saying, when you are dealing with a mono track. So, if you have 2 guitars playing, for example, you could position them so that one was at 100%L and one was at 100%R for a really wide spread or you could choose to do something like 20%L and 20%R to bring them together a bit more.

Enjoy! :)

So, your saying you can't record guitar in stereo at all?
You are not playing in stereo, so why would you want to use twice the hard drive space? If you have a stereo track with the exact same signal on both sides, it is the same thing as a mono signal panned to the center.
If you are running some sort of stereo effect, you need to plug both outputs into your interface.

Thanks guys, this really helps. I'll engage the mono switch and see if it helps.

Thanks all

keep posting your results if you would....

i tried the m-audio and usb, took it back but due to software ignorance
and $$ time.

please if you don't mind...updating your lieks/dislikes.....

I take your a newbie to PC RECORDING?

I haven't tried the recording yet (will do later) but as far as the FastTrack goes, I feel it's very easy to use and get to grips with. The software package that comes with it is very good too. Over all I like it.

And, yeah, I'm pretty much a newbie to computer recording. :p

Well guys, that has seemed to solve my problem! Working fine now. I know a lot more about recording guitar than I did a couple of days ago anyway. Thanks all! :)

I'm not even a newbie.
This Senior Member tag is because of thread qtys. I take it..not knowledge related?

I do like trying out new toys but when it comes to $$ its tight.
and with no refund on software...it's great to have this forum.

I don't have deadlines on projects so I'm not in a big hurry.

The PC sounds so attractive with the "only 48 tracks" effects, mixdown, burn a CD-R..geez!
but the rest of it (lock-ups, interfacing, pops, soundcards, memory storage..
1ghz..2ghz, formats, 9 million options) it's a bit over the top for me.

and in the end..even the REAL Senior Members say to Master it somewhere else!!

The user firendly USB caught my attention so I'm curious how you like it.
Plug and PLay man..thats what I'm talkin bout.
