Recording guitar effects

Hi all,

Is it better to have effects like a pod and then record that or is it OK to play straight guitar and add the effects on the computer?

Haven't used a computer yet,but it's good to get your "basic" dry sound down first.......that is,without time based effects added (delays,choruses,flange,ect...or use them sparingly).Sometimes what sounds good on a guitar by itself will sound bloated when you stick it in the mix....and once the effects are printed,it's too late!

Going dry and adding effects after is a typical studio practice - but keep in mind, if you have the sound you want, including an effect, there is no rule against you printing it right then and there. (Since you're tracking to some, if not all, tracks already recorded, you'll already have a fair idea of where the guitar (with the effect) will sit in the mix...)
