so when i first started recording all i had was a mixer to record my sound through and some really cheap software and occasionally the software would crap out on me somehow it seemed to like jumble up my sounds that i was recording and i thought it was just because i had shitty software and didnt have a proper sound card/interface but now i have and m-audio mobile pre mk2 and pro tools se and i am on a different computer and it still seems to be doing the same thing except now it will randomly clip
does anyone have any clue what im doing wrong?

windows xp 3gb ram 250gb memory with a 500 gb external hard drive

well the clipping might be from you running your mic level too high.

Can you be a bit more specific with the software problem you are having? This: "somehow it seemed to like jumble up my sounds that i was recording" doesn't really give me much to go on.

ive made sure the level wasnt to high but even if i press record and dont play anything it will clip in the beginning seconds
and well whenever i play back the audio it seems like some parts of it were taken out

sounds like CPU overload - can you view the CPU level with task manager and see if the CPU is maxing out? Might be other applications using up your processor cycles - could also be a buffer issue - are you using ASIO drivers? or are there specific drivers for the M-Audio?

make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers

Do you have a compressor on the input? If there's no signal a compressor will boost the noise until it clips if the settings are bad.
