For many years I have used an A77 and Teac 3340 units for recording. I have many tapes and would like to know whether it is possible to transfer these recordings to my very recently purchased 2488. Also, as I do not have a drum machine (or drums), can I transfer files using Garageband. I am very new to digital technology, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes you can transfer those tapes to the 2488.
Simply put them on a reel to reel and play them and record the output to your 2488. :)

I'm thinking you were hoping there's a simple file transfer you could use by clicking on something.
How could that be since the tapes have not been converted to a digital format?
You will have to play them in real time and record it ..... no other way. Once you have done that though, you'll be able to transfer the resulting files around as you see fit.

I'm not familiar with Garageband so someone else will have to help you with that.

Thanks Lt Bob for your reply. After hooking up the Revox to the 2488, using channels 5 and 6, I got no response from the channels' pots. Do I have to make a new song, or am I missing something quite fundamental.

regards

Brian

you mean there's no sound coming into those two channels on the 2488?

I'm not familiar specifically with that unit but I know that for most digital stuff you have to create a song to record to.
However ...... you should see some meter movement if there's sound going in there.
Do you have the record buttons armed?
On my Fostexes I can have a channel selected for recording but it will show nothing until I press the record button. That doesn't make it record .... you have to press record AND play simultaneously to actually record but you do have to press the record button to 'monitor' the input.
