hi,
I've always studied on acoustic instruments but loved the idea of having strings and other orchestral instruments come out of my keyboard. So I got a Yamaha S08.
My question is this: I really want to hook this thing up to my computer and record whatever I play and make my music into mp3 format. Can anyone suggest software that can do this, keeping in mind that I'd like to keep it as simple as possible? I'm not very savvy with the current music software.
I do have a MIDI cable (MIDI in/out on one end and a USB connection on the other). I've hooked this up and the programs I've tried either result in no sound, or I do have sound but can't save as mp3.
I also have a Toshiba satellite laptop if that needs to be considered.

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!

MIDI is not audio. If you want to record audio, you have run the audio out on your S08 into the audio input on your computer's soundcard.

Laptop's have terrible built in soundcards and often lack line level inputs. You will need some kind of USB, Firewire or PC-Card audio interface first before you even start thinking about what software to use.

well, I do have a firewire on the laptop as well as 3 usb ports.
Are you saying that those would have to be on the soundcard for a decent connection?

No. Those are digital connections. The sound that is coming from your keyboard is analogue and (probably) comes through 1/4" jack cables. You will need a device that will convert your analogue signal to a digital signal, preferably with a firewire/usb connection. M-Audio makes a ton of these things, aswell as Presonus, ART and many, many others. Do a forum search on AD converters.
