Recording for CD playback?

We have a school play coming up soon and we need to record the piano accompaniment for practice so we don't have to keep tracking down the piano player!

We want to play it back on a CD boombox so I guess that means the piano needs to be recorded in a regular CD format since not all boomboxes can play back MP3's and other "computer" type formats.

We were thinking of recording it with a laptop and an inexpensive microphone plugged in. Is there some kind of freeware/shareware that will help us record this and still be able to let us play it back on a boombox? If not, any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Audacity for recording, Musicmatch for burning a CDR. Keep in mind, some older players won't play any sort of "burned" disc.
