30 feet? Wouldn't that be far enough away to where it would pick up a weak signal? I'm assuming the second mic should be moved back and forth with the singer screaming to get a good recording level for when he's screaming. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Whatever works. This was done more as an effect than a safety against clipping. I believe they actually used 3 mics with each one gated to trigger at a certain volume.

The Used

M Brane "Sounds good for a rough mix. Cool riff too", thanks man you can check out more of our stuff at www.stormpages.com/wireneck/main.html most of the sounds are older though.
mwarkentin, I dont usually go for the punk sounding stuff but I really like that song " Box full of sharp objects". Def a different style of punkish music.

"The Used"

Yup! "The Used" is a great disc -- those guys are from my state! They just got signed to Warner Bros/(reprise). Wonder what their first MTV video will be? (Check out "Maybe Memories" too)

aw man, i liked these guys too, i like that style.

but if they just got signed to be doing mtv and things like that, they're doomed.

its not that i dislike them YET, ha.
and for many bands, i tihnk everyone could agree its a hell of a lot more then "making a living", i'd say its more like making "100 livings"...ha

but nevertheless - look at many or all the bands that have moved to bigger record companies, or mtv, etc.
if you listen to thier original styles, and then their latest, i'm sure you'll see a huge change. for example, weezer blue and pinkerton is a very unique style, and i love them. I was expecting the same from green, and was dissappointed when only 1 song hit my sweet spot. same goes for maladroit - except i really dont like that one at all...haha.

i'll get back to this later though, i gotta make some food,..ha

making 100 livings?

think of how few bands really get signed to a major label deal

now take that MAYBE 10% of those bands that are lucky enough to get signed actually MAKE money.

If they are lucky enough to get on mtv, they better take what they can get because chances are they'll be working back at target if they aren't careful.

all the rappers with the "bling bling" in their videos find out they have to return all that shit when the contract is up and they can't sell anymore records

that all may be / IS true, but then again i dont know many artists who got to the big time, and once "pop culture" was through with them, ever made anything else again - etc.

mtv?

mtv still plays rock music? I thought they stopped doing that years ago..all i ever see when i quickly graze past the channel is awful programs and rap music.
..i have profited this discussion in no way..and for that i apologize.

haha musk, don't even get me started on mtv's play lists

how many friggen real world marathons can you show a week??

i have been mtv free for over a year now

Actually, what I meant was they were a local band here that got a recording contract. Saw one of their videos on their website; that's what I meant. If they'll put either "Maybe Memories" or "Box" on MTV first.

Mwarkentin- Stick the dude in front of an AKG D112! It's a dynamic bass and kick drum mic, and there is no way he can clip it.
Adjust mic pre input gain to taste, and he can scream his heart out. The mic will win. If it doesn't sound great, it's still a fine bass cab and kick drum mic, and every project studio should have one or two anyway. Also, if you get a chance to try out an AKG Solid Tube, it handles high SPL's very well, and is at its best with really loud singers.-Richie

Thanks Richard.. I'll see what kind of kick mic I'll have available, I'm borrowing it from the local guitar shop/live sound place.

I don't have a "project studio" but there are no studios within 6 hours of where I live, so I am trying to make do with what I can get my hands on. :)

distancing and input gain

really if your think about, can your singer outsing a double stack marshall or randall 100-150 watt guitar amp? probably not. its all a matter of distancing and input gain setting. get him at about 4 ft (max) from the vocal condensor, and get him to scream as loud as he can, set your mic appropriately. rememer to use an input dB pad if necessary. 30' ft is ridiculous, i use my condensor to quickly record our jams , the ENTIRE band making huge noise levels, maybe even 90 dB at times, drums, guitars, bass vocals, everything.. and we still only have the condensor 5 ft in front of the front end. just keep tweaking your distance and gain, trying to maintain at least 1/3 of your gain dial. Don't compress on the way in unless you have a very expensive sweet sounding compressor, save that for onscreen later, that way you can transparently add compression, gating and or limited *only where* needed and softly go in and out so it goes un-noticed. often i dont bother, all i do is physically lower the amplitude of a "chunk" or region. where the vocal is too loud, that way your entire wav is more uniform, and during master you can expand, and compress simultaneously to get that FULL sound you hear so much today... where all the headroom is full on the CD, like Staind or Creed or whatever, instead of sounding weak at any moment - of course some people hate that style of production, and prefer the 80's when music actually had dynamic attenuation haha

my 2 cents

Yeah I hear ya.. my question more has to do with recording a mixture of extremely loud screaming, and some more quiet singing, maybe even whispery stuff..

SPL's

the ENTIRE band making huge noise levels, maybe even 90 dB at times,

LOL! If you think 90db is huge noise I think you need to go down to the nearest Rat Shack and get yourself a meter...:D

The last time I brought mine to a rehearsal we (guitar, bass and drums) were peaking at about 115 to 120.

Yes, it was in an untreated garage and the plugs were in.:p

it was probably way higher LOL im scared to think just how loud it really is. i need some good ear plugs that dont totally anniliate the certain frequency rages if there is such a thing.

Yeah, plugs suck but they're better than the alternatives (turning down or going deaf). You just have to get used to 'em. The hardest thing for me is trying to sing with 'em in, especially backing harmonies.
