Hey Im new at this but I have some awsome lyrics and want to start putting beats to them. What equipment do I need? I want to create my own beat and add my voice into it, then record it on a cd. I know nothing about this and Im on a budget. Is it better to get software for my computer? Ive tried free software downloads and they arent exactly the best, but are the better programs worth it, or should I stick with getting all the hardware, if so what hardware do I need?

Thanks,

Lil Drew

Theres a whole world of options here for the choosing. You can easilly find yourself lost in a sea of expences buying the latest and greatest gear that will hopefully do what you want. You can grab a stand alone recording system that will open the door of recording...but leave you wanting more. I would suggest that you scoop up a couple budget minded programs and get the show, and learning curve, started with the very computer you have. A pretty fair beat program that is free as shareware is Fruity loops. It has a gang of preset beats as well as the room for you to tap in your own. N-tracks multitrack recording software is a reasonable intro program too. Theres a thread on this BBS for N-tracks too where you can score some good tips for options. Meanwhile as you stretch your wings with the computer options you can slowly go out and nab gear as your budget allows. Once you catch the fever to record you are doomed to be eternally broke.... and probably divorced too. But do not despair my brother we are in it with you. You can start recording for basically nothing with free software or shareware. Theres folks on this sight that have more cash than Trump invested in their rigs. But the last thing you need to do is run out and buy a gang of stuff because it is "supposed to do" what you need. Just get a start with what you have, play with it, research, ask and explore. The shopping list will present itself.

Thanks Even! I tryed Furity Loops but I cant figure out how to use it. Ive been playen around with it for about a week and all I know how to do on it is make the beat, from there I dont know how to save it (the save option in the file menu is dissabled), and dont know how to get my voice in or anything. It seems like a cool program but it is very confusing. Dose anyone know where I can learn how to work fruityloops?

Thanks again,

Lil Drew

well the downside is that the shareware version is simply a check it out deal. The save feature is enabled if you decide to purchase it. As far as adding your voice goes...thats where the multitrack recording program (N-tracks) comes into play. You laydown or record the sporty beat on one track and then play it back while busting down the lyrics on a second track...and so on and so on
