recording equipment help

i am planning on getting a new computer this christmas and hoping to record with it but am not sure what kind of equipment to get for it (sound card, processors, pre amps or what not) any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

You might want to post a little more info on your budget, how many instuments/musicians you are trying to record at once, and what type of interface you are considering (a soundcard with breakout cables or an external USB/ Firewire setup). It would also be helpful to describe your new computer and list some basic specs.
