ok... i got PROTOOLS 7 with an M-BOX and a MXL 990 mic... everything works fine... i know my way pretty much around... but the only thing i need help on is recording vocals... as far as how to set the levles just right... that way the vocals come in nice, crisp, and loud on the playback... but not have that distorted sound from the mic because it peaks...

please help. thank you.

Do u have a hardware equalizer? If not, then try inserting an RTA EQ effect on all the vocal tracks to be able to boost the highs.

???

get you MC to spit is lyrics into the mic, at the same volume that he'd do it when he records. set the gain knob so that you're not peaking. voila.

if it sounds saturated, but hasn't clipped in tools, then it's cause your MC is spitting too loud. so either tell him to quiet down, or move the mic away. however, i doubt this will happen unless he's screaming like a motherfucker.

you're m-box also has a "peak" light on it which'll flash red everytime the signals coming in to hot. turn the level down until it stops peaking.

honestly, if you "know your way around", i dont comprehend why you're asking help on this...it seems the most basic thing ever to get levels sorted..............................

if you're have trouble with 'plosives, try moving the mic slightly off axis...

you can do this by turning it to the side a bit, or have it point up/down a bit.

just dont do this too radically...
