recording electronic drum kit

Hi, my name is Jerry. I am a newbe to all of this recording stuff. I have been into the low end of hi end audio for many years and have played the drums when I was younger. I decided to get back into playing the drums about 4 years ago. I have a Hart dynamics 5.3 pro electronic kit with Hart and Roland cymbals with a roland TD-8 module.
My main objective is to record some music from my cd's then record me playing my drum kit while listening to the music.(for practice) I would like to do this so I can hear how I sound on play back. After I learn how to do this with a digital or analog recorder, at some point I would also like to be able to record myself with a musician or two.
I need something thats easy to learn without alot of frills, did I mention affordable. I was looking at the fostex MR-8 Mk 2 but am not sure if this will do the job.
I have called stores that sell this type of gear and I never get the same answer so im more confused now then when I started.
I have an great audio system with a casette deck so if I decided to keep somthing or play it back I can. Any advise would be appreciated......

Hi There Jerry,

That Fostex MR-8 looks alright. For what you said you want, you may be able to achieve that if you can deal with recording only 2 people simultaneously. Otherwise, if you are only going to record one track or two at tops at a time, it will do you fine for now.

With the electronic drum kit, from what i remember, you can't send out each piece of equipment (ie, hats, toms, snare,etc..) seperately to be tracked, so you will using only one track (two at best) for your electronic kit on your recorder. Just thought you should be weary of that, whether thats an issue or not is upto you.

Really though, all i can say is. Do thorough research and go to music stores and get an idea of the gear, come back home do some more research, and so on and so forth.

Really, it can be confusing. But if you were to take up another hobby, you'd experience other issues too . Anyway, alot of it is more just trial and error, mucking around is the best way to start out.
