I record my band with drums. Most recently we recorded using 6 mics: 2 overheads (using string to make sure they were the same distance from the snare), kick, snare, hi-hat and floor tom. After listening to it all, we agree that it sounds great, but we'll most likely only use the 2 overheads and the kick.
My point here is that you can get great drum sound with 3 mics. Basically we used recorderman and added a kick mic.
So, you've got $250 and need a 4 input interface. (I don't think a 3 input interface exists)
The Alesis IO4 does 4 tracks at 16 bit, but only 2 at 24 bit. You want 24 bit.
Wow - 15 minutes searching and no 4 input interfaces with 4 out at your price point. You might have to go used. Or settle for 16 bit.
If you can find another $250, I love my Mackie Blackbird - $499, 8 inputs, great quality.
