FIRST PUT YOUR DRUMS IN THE BEST POSSIBLE SOUNDING POSITION IN THE ROOM. THEN TUNE THEM! Then do this...
Recorderman Technique:
Get two overhead mic's (I used Oktava MK012s)...
1. Place the "left" mic directly over the snare pointing directly towards the snare. To get the correct length away from the snare, put two drum sticks together (end to end) and stick them in the middle of the snare and put the mic at the top of them (again, pointing directly at the snare).
2. Place the "right" mic directly over the bass tom/right crash cymbal. Angle it directly at the snare's center. Set it at the same height as the "left" mic you setup. Now use a string or guitar cord to make sure it's pointing directly at the center of the snare.
3. Use the string/guitar cord to make sure that both mics are equal distances from the snare AND the center of the kick drum.
Pan "left" hard left and pan "right" hard right. Should get a nice sound and won't have to change the mic positions that much if at all. In fact, you could record the whole kit with these two mics and get a decent sound... but I'd recommend at least putting a mic on the kick (for rock anyway)... for jazz it may suffice.
To make sure your image is right just adjust the "right" mic until the kick drum is in the center.

then you can google up drum equalization settings. or something similar and come up with something decent.
