recording drums with tascam 424

howdy,
my band and i have been recording songs here and there directly onto the computer track at a time without the aid of a mixer for drums. we've just recently had a tascam portastudio 424 dropped into our lap and we figured that we could use it to even out the sound of our drums and get a better drum sound than we were with one mic. the only problem is when when we put the mics on our set all we got was a buzzing in place of drums. can anybody offer some help?

we've not really got anything fancy for mics due to lack of funds. the mics we have are one shure sm58, one apex, one akg, and one optimus. any help would be appretiated, this has just been a little frustrating. thanks.

I assume you are basically using the 424 as an outboard mixer?

Buzzing is normally an electrical short so I'd start by checking your cables. Plug some headphones into the 424 and check indvidual mic channels for faults (also look at the input meters). Try plugging the line outs into an amp or other equipment to check that hook up is working as well.

Out of interest, how are you placing your mics?
