I have the M-Audio Projectmix with 8 simultaneous XLR or 1/4" inputs, and I need to record 9 simultaneous inputs (8 from my drums and 1 guitar amp).

I know that the better option is to buy another pre-amp with ADAT to the Projectmix (like the M-Audio octane), but I can't afford that right now.

Is there anyway that I could combine two inputs into one? I was thinking of 2 ideas. Would either work or is there a better idea?
1. Combine my two condenser Overheads into 1 stereo input - would that work?
2. Combine my 2 snare mics - I have 2 SM57s on the snare, 1 on top out of phase with the lower one. Could I combine the two (invert one, of course) and have them go into one input on my console?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Pete

All inputs are mono, feeding stereo overheads to one mono channel would not end too well. Record with one overhead or without the bottom mic on snare.
Maybe you could rent a pre?

What are the 9 drum mics you need? I'm sure one could be ditched.

Greg_L just posted a mix and I think it just had 7 drum tracks and seemed more than sufficient to mix. Kick, Snare, 3 Toms, 2 Overheads. Leaves one for the Amp. Just a thought.

I mic my drums with 4. Not saying everyone else should do the same thing, but I'm pretty sure my drum tracks are far from sucking. It all depends on how many toms he has. If he wants to mic each tom and has many of them, I can understand that. But if he's doing things like micing hi-hats and using a room mic in a room that shouldn't be miced, that's another story.

Totally agree, was just giving an example of someone using less and it seemed to be fine. Seems 4 in general would get one where they nee to be.

The project Mix has ADAT...M*Audio Project Mix I/O

So, beg, buy or hire a Behringer ADA8000 (better the new one) if you REALLY need more inputs.
There are of course better ADAT pres about but they are significantly more money.

Dave. Ooops, just spotted that was already said! No matter, Great Minds they say!
