Guys whats up. Ive got a guy coming over in about 3 hours to record some drum tracks. The problem is that I only have 2 mic preamps. I have the AKG d770 and the Audiotechnica 4040. Where is the best place to place these 2 mics for the best sound, or should I say, most true sound. I was thinking to use the akg for the kick drum and use the 4040 for an overhead. I know it sucks to only have one over head because of the lack of stereo image but I cant think of a better option. Please give me advice on this. Thank you!

Go for it!

Eric,
I am unfamiliar with the AKG but if the room sound is ok ,with 2 mics I would suggest putting one about a foot to 16 inches(possibly more) out in front of the kick about a foot off the ground (which will catch your kick , bottom snares and bottom tom sounds) and then place the other as an overhead behind the kit above the drummers head about a foot. You will have to experiment with placement of the overhead a little to achieve the proper balance between snare, toms and cymbols.
I've done it with 3 before and gotten a good mix, 2 will work with some experimentation. (I hope!)

Let us know how it turns out. Many great ideas and stories come from hot under the gun situations where you have to be creative.

if you have a good room you'll be ok....chad smith has used the 1 overhead, 1 kick technique on occassion.

did you go to full sail?
