Right now, I have a D112 and a Beta 52 for the kick...thus far, I've found the 52 catching more boom and the D112 catching more punch...thinking about trying to use both, but didn't know if I might run into phase problems...D112 inside and 52 on the outside...

On the snare, I'm double miking (top and bottom) with 57's, top miking 57's on the toms, as well (I'm poor in the mic dept!!!)

I'm using 2 Peavey 480s for overheads.

I've been messing with the kit all week, and for the most part, for dry sounds, I'm pretty pleased, but wanted to know if anyone has anything they would recommend...

Being a newbie here, I know I have alot to learn, but I've also learned alot already!

I'm running the signals through a Carvin C2444 mixer and then through the Layla 24 into my computer.

...transmission out

No hard & fast rules on this, if it sounds right, it is right. A couple of things you might want to check though; if you have a mic inside and one outside on the kick, there's a very good chance that the two mics will be out of phase with each other. Same with the top and bottom snare mics. If your mixer has a phase reverse switch on each channel, flip the phase on the inside kick mic and the bottom snare mic. I see you're recording into a computer. You can check to see if you have a phase issue by recording a few hits of the different kick and snare mics and comparing the wave forms to see if they're out of phase with each other but it's been my experience that they probably will be.

Thanks for the input, track rat...

The session went pretty well, and we were able to knock out alot of tracks in a short amount of time....

Just listening back again today, I noticed (and was surprised after reading your post!), that we didn't have any evident phase issues.....it was actually really cool how much of the raspy snare sound you can grab from the bottom of a snare drum!!

If anything, the double miking the kicks made it a bit more boomy than I was hoping, but after pulling the 52 down in the mix, more for texture, ended up with a pretty decent sound....

For the first time, I'm pretty pleased...note that next week, I probably won't be!!!!

live and learn, I suppose!
