I am interested in learning how to record a DMX music station from my sat provider to CD. Will an audio line out from my TV to microphone line in on my laptop in combo with software that records anything playing through my soundcard work and will it produce a decent sounding recording?

You could take the line output of your reciever to the line input of your soundcard. That would give you as good as a recording as the A/D converters in the soundcard are capable of. Many sat recievers and and cable boxes have an optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) output. If you had a soundcard with the TOSLINK input, you could make a digital transfer.

One other option you might consider is the use of a Tivo/UTV digital video recorder. These can record hours of direct sat feed in the native format. You can then go back after the fact and pick the selections you want from a night time of recording.

Most such units have both line and digital outputs for the recorded data, so your PC recording options are still in tack.
