We’re going to record a demo for our band at the end of february, and want it to sound as good as possible. We have 8 tracks simultanous recording at our disposal. Here’s our planned setup:

Drums: snare SM57, kick ATM-25 (rented), overheads 2xECM8000. Maybe an extra room mic, STAGG (U87 copy, but sounds really good)

Bass: Tech21 or countryman DI box?

Guitars: 2xSM57

All these go into a Mackie 1604 and into a Hoontech C-port, 24-bit soundcard. Voice and violin is tracked later. We have time enough to experiment with Mic-placement and sound.

Does anyone have any suggestions to my plans? Also, I don’t know what is meant by XY-ing the drum overheads. Of course we want to pick up some tom sounds as well.

Is it a good idea to be able to make several headphone mixes with the Mackie, or is it just a lot of extra fuzz?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
