Recording Delay on seperate track

It seems like a lot of rock CDs have the guitar on one side and just the delay or echo from that guitar on the other. What are some of the more common procedures that can be used to accomplish this?

You add the delay in the mixdown via a aux send, and pan it wherever you want it.
