recording console suggestions

i have a little tascam that has 2 inputs and it works great for recording the songs i write, but i want to be able to record bands too. i have no idea what to get. there's so much out there. i want something that i can record at least 8 tracks simultaneously--something that i can plug into my computer. something with at least 16 available play back tracks. --something easy to use.

please suggest something. thanks

edit, oh and it has to be portable and self contained.

Take a look at the Zoom hd16cd. It's self contained, 8 tracks simultaneous, and can double as a Daw controller. The Tascam 2488 gets pretty good reviews as well, or the Korg D888 for the front end of a nice laptop.
