recording clean electric

i've had fantastic results with my tele through my fender champ. a sen 609 on the grille (maybe a little off-center) and an MXL V77 a few inches away and apart from the 609 (gotta listen to find where the phase alignment works). put the guitar on the neck pickup, dial the amp into about 6 across the board, and play away. beautiful clean fender tone for days.

likewise, i've had great results with my ibanez artcore hollowbody and a vox pathfinder 15. the same 609 on the grille and my dragonfly about where i'd put the V77 on the champ. since it's a hollowbody, i'll sometimes put the V77 or an MXL 603 micing the guitar itself. dial in the amp, and have fun. completely different sound than the champ/tele combo, and with each panned L/R, you can get some cool sounds.

i think a large part of the trick is to start with an amp that sounds good in the first place.

honestly, i've found it far easier to get a solid, fat clean electric sound than an overdriven one that doesn't sound brittle or thin.

YMMV
