Can anyone help me out with this? I have battery setup as a vst in my cubase project. I have a midi track for each drum part of my beat. Now i see there's 16 channels for battery below but how do i go about recording the beat that i wrote in battery? Is there an easy way to just record once and have each drum part go to a seperate audio track from battery?

for every "samplewindow" in battery you can choose one (for example: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, ...) from 16 Stereo outputs (or 32Mono). But recording the output from the Batteryaudiochannels is not possible, just with audioexport.

*cough* RTFM *cough* :D

OK, OK... In battery, when you click on the individual drum pads, in the lower right-hand corner you'll see the output assignment, which is by default 1/2. Click and drag to assign a different output channel.

Now, what I am not clear on is the way you work. Are you saying you have a separate MIDI track for kick, another one for snare, another for hats? If so, that's definitely a convoluted way of working. It's best to use one MIDI track, assign drum map to it, so you can use the drum editor to create your drum parts.

If you want to bounce each drum to a separate audio track, there is no way to do it in one pass. What you'll need to do, after you have assigned the individual outputs for the drums is go to the Export Audio dialog, and select the relevant output, then check Pool and Audio Track checkboxes and save. You'll need to do this for each output.

What are the benefits of using the drum editor for creating drum parts? I play all my drum loops live and then quantize them. Even while working this way are there benefits to using drum maps?

Well, certainly if you're able to play the drums live, that's the best way to go, unless of course you're after a mechanical feel which would be appropriate for certain styles. Even so, the main benefit of using drum maps and the drum editor is the fact that instead of dealing straight with MIDI notes, you'll see what drum hit belongs to what drum, which is not readily possible when using the key editor.

In your case, since you want to play Battery live from a controller (I'm presuming this is MIDI drums?), then all you need to do is setup a MIDI track, make sure that its input is set to the input port of the MIDI interface to which your controller is connected to and the output is set to Battery. Then arm the track, and record away.

how do i send different drums in battery to different effects if they are all on one midi channel? is it easier just to record the audio and then loop it or can i route single pads through effects with battery?

You insert the effects on the audio out channels, not the midi channel itself

yes, but how do i get that single drum pad from battery assigned to a single audio track in cubase without running the entire battery kit through it?

Select the appropriate output channel on battery, and apply effects to that channel. Each pad will have an output destination ie 1-2,3-4,5-6 etc. Those outs will show under the VST devices as audio tracks
