On some occasions I actually love "triple mode" with an extra condensor near the right hand of the bassplayer

This works nicely on electric guitar as well....and i LOVE doing it on a hollowbody. adds a nice "something extra" to the track--it's one of those "you don't notice it when it's there, but you miss it when it's gone" things.

DI for bass......Countryman Type 85 is usually a surefire bet in my book. I've also had good results with an M-Audio Tampa and a Studio Projects VTB-1. The VTB1 is nice for an "edgier" bass sound. many folks have gotten good results with one of the Radial boxes, as well as the Avalon DI.

In my understanding, to DI a bass, you need some sort of preamp to convert the instrument level signal to a line-level signal and you need to convert the high impedance of the instrument to a lower impedance signal. A preamp with a DI section accomplishes both. A DI box alone only takes care of the impedance, but does not amplify the signal. Personally, I use the Groove Tubes Brick for most DI/preamp duties, as it sounds sweet on bass.

Using the line-out from your amp is fine as long as it sounds good to you.

You could use a passive DI box run into a pre on your board, or into any other mic pre.

Only if the bass is active. A passive bass will sound dead through a passive DI.

Well, I just meant that it's possible. My SansAmp Bass Driver sees all my bass duties.

is the countryman type 85 a passive DI? Or will that work with a passive bass? that looks like what I need. A little bit pricey perhaps, but it looks like a pretty solid piece of gear. I'm getting tired of cheap crap that breaks and/or sounds shitty.

yes it is an active DI--and it works very nicely with a passive bass (fender P, J, etc). No, it's not cheap, but it's built very solidly and sounds excellent IMO. works nicely on guitar too--makes my tele twang like it's never twanged before.

I second the Sansamp Bass Driver. I've used it as my primary bass DI in the studio and live. It's a great unit and does a great job emulating a raging SVT, and gets some other great overdrive tones. I have also had good luck with a MXR M80 Bass DI+ which, like the Sansamp is designed for bass. The MXR has 2 channels, one clean and one distortion.

I recommend the Sansamp over the MXR though. Both can be powered by phantom power too.
