Recording bass

Is it ever a good idea to use the "preamp out" from a bass combo directly into a mixer to record a bass track? Or is it a better move just to mic the amp with a trusty SM57? I'm working late at night, and it would be nice not to wake the rest of the household...

While direct guitar is not that great in most people's ears, direct bass is.

Bu the best thing is to try both and compare, and stick with what you think sounds best.

but how professionals do record BASS ?, they mic the AMP or they plug the bass directly to the mixer ?

Both... bass through a DI to the console/recorder, along with a mic'd amp...

Im using a bass pod pro right now and its doing a damn good job. I tried the DI thing, also micing the cab. This box gives me alot more flexibilty.

But thats just my exp. Some people hate it

Pretty much all of the bass on my current project was tracked straight into an Avalon AD2022, which has the same DI circuitry as an Avalon U5. A standard of the industry, the U5 can be had for about $500. There are much cheper units, such as Sansamp and Countryman. Actually, a DMP-3 isn't a bad bass DI box. Recording bass direct into a preamp or DI box is a common practice.-Richie
