Recording Bass with effects

Hello: I am in need of advice. I am planning to record bass and the desired effect is that of fretless bass player Jaco Pastorius or any of the later copycats that have appeared over the past 10 years or so. What it sounds like to me is Jaco used a chorus or delay to get his fretless to sound very fat and doubled. My question is whether or not to add the effect during recording, dial in the effect during mixdown or create a separate 'effected' track?

I think the effect Jaco uses are his hands and incredable talent. The Acoustic 360 Preamp has a few built in effects that he might use but its mostly the coated neck, round wound strings, the 360 amp and his abilty to make the bass talk.
