Me and a friend are starting a online/recording death/grind band and I don't know much about buying recording software and hardware. Its just a guitarist and a vocalist and i live in new mexico and the vocalist lives in north carolina so i was wondering what kinda stuff would be good for us to buy thats not that expensive. I have m-audio session but thats it.

You could probably both use a free recording program like Audacity. Or Reaper. Reaper is only $40 but is a lot better.

Then when you work on projects you can send each other your tracks via e-mail or upload sites like: www.YouSendIt.com.

Do you have any microphones or anything yet?

No we don't have anything yet. We don't really know what we need besides some kinda drum program

ok i downloaded reaper but what do i have to have to record the stuff?

You need a microphone. Which one you get depends on what you'll be recording and what your budget is. If it's for electric/distorted guitar you might want to go with a dynamic mic like the Shure SM57, although there are a lot of other options out there.

Then you'll need a preamp. A microphone signal isn't 'loud' enough to be recorded directly so you need something to amplify it before it's recorded. There are a lot of decent inexpensive preamps to choose from.

Then you'll need a soundcard/interface to record with.

What is your budget? How many tracks do you want to record at once?

Edit: If you want to record electric guitar direct without a mic then you don't need one but it will sound a lot worse.

im guessing by tracks you mean instruments. Just vocals, 2 guitars, and use a drum machine or drum software for drums.
