recording audio with no regaurd for time?

What is the best way to record audio free form. By that I mean, I am not trying to stay in time with the messures. I want to record just like I was doing it on tape but when I do that the Transport slider jumps to the middle and is un-useable? If I record and I stay in time with the metrenome I do not have this problem.

Any ideas?

You should just be able to hit record and go, I do it all the time. I think the default tempo is 100 but I just ignore it.
 
Sorry Guys CW9

I'm using CW9. I can record buy I have that side effect where the transport slider just hops to the middle and stays there on play back. I thought maybe I needed to switch to a different timming option? SMPTE or something? I guess I can live with the problem. It just makes it harder to edit later.
