Recording An Electric Guitar

I've been recording stuff since last year (with a 4-track and PC) and I've played around with different techniques. I used to only record my amp with the line out socket. But I grew to dislike the way it sounded so I ended up sticking a microphone in front of the amp instead, which sounded a helluva lot better.

I've written a ton of songs and I'm now attempting to record an album at home digitally (all run of the mill stuff) and I was wondering if anybody could give me any tips about microphone placement etc.

Thanks in advance

Shure SM57 about one inch off the grill. Point it about half way between the center and the edge of the speaker and move to taste. More center will be a brighter edgier sound. More towards the edge will be a smoother sound. Moving the mic back away from the grill will reduce low end build up.
