Hi all, I sing in a male choir (Oppdal manskor)Oppdal Norway.

What I would like to do is record our practice time and concerts in and around Norway. Then burn cd's and distribute amongst our members for practice when they have time. Equipment I have now, AKG 1000s, Sony minidisk, computer with all needed hardware and software.

I am just starting and would like to start out right! I have tried recording with th mic and the minidisk and it seems flat and no power. Would I need a mic pre amp? Also just give me any info, tidbits or personal experiances would be very appreciated.

Many thanks to all how can help :)

Your AKG mic needs phantom power and some sort of preamp. I don't know if the Sony minidisk supplies that. Secondly, I don't think one AKG C1000 is going to be enough for an entire men's choir. For vocals, most people use a large diaphragm condenser mic (the AKG you've got is a small condenser), and for recording a choir, many people would use two mics in a stereo configuration. The room you record in is important too.

I know it's not the same thing, but I recorded a full orchestra several times using a simple stereo pair from the audience seating with great success. If I'd had better mics for higher SPL handling and more response, I could've mic'ed closer and gotten a fuller, richer sound, but you know? It really sounded great. And the performers really help. If they suck, there's nothing you can do to make it sound good. Thankfully they were very talented.

as said above, you definately need a mic pre with phantom and get another mic, but I have done quite a lot of this sought of work and you can get an excellent result with just a stereo pair. The mic positions depend a lot on how many in your choir and how you set them up. So experiment.

There is a lot more you can do, but it will cost more (compression, spot mic's, better mics, better recording device etc) but you should be happy with the results you get.
