I just bought a marshall hybrid amp

(a tube pre amp and a solid state amp.)

It has a really nice marshall sound and im having a hard time getting an over-fuzzed recording with it. im using an 80 dollar mxl, so im betting its my shitty mic. is there a trick with the eq anyone knows about when it comes to recording marshall amps?

thanks

I like to DI my Marshall, as well as using a mic (usually a Senny e609). It comes through, nice and 'clean' for me, at least the same as my ear 'hears it'! :D

I've got quite a few MXL mics, and they can be a bit 'harsh' at times, though I like them for their price, etc.
How about trying another mic, even a 57?! ;)

One of the reasons I like the e609 so much, as it doesn't ever seem to need any EQ. The tone, coming into the board, just seems to be the same as my ear hears coming out of the speaker. It just seems pretty 'idiot' proof!

Anyway, don't know what other mics you have, but try a dynamic, and see what ya think.

Let us know...

Over-fuzzed? Do you mean like a sheering hi gain tone? I owned one of those hybrid amps and honestly it's just a solidstate marshall with a starved plate toob in it. I was never able to get a terribly good sound from it. You may actually need a pedal to get the distortion you're looking for.

there are a couple cool pedals that could help get that "fuzz" tone. I use a Brooklyn made Big Muff. There are also a ton of hand-made fuzz's and distortion pedal's out there that sound killler.

I would suggest running a DI out of the amp as well. EQ out a sliver at 1K to get the 4X12 cab sound.

maybe re-amp the DI into a borrowed cab...i don't know

the distortion i get live from it is unbelievable, thats what puzzled me at first about not being able to transfer the sound to tracks.

i tried mic'ing and going to direct and it works alot better!

thanks!!!

What sounds good live, and what sounds good recorded can be vastly different things.

I have always used less gain for recording than I would live!

What he said. Use less distortion when recording.

yea i turned the gain down and direct in'ed as well as mic'ed and it worked fine. thanks.

and yes i do realize that live and recorded sound is different, thats why i specified the help was directed towards recording the amp. :)
