Recording a Leslie...

I'm having a problem, and I can't quite figure out a non-$$$ way around it...

I'm having difficulty with mic placement where I won't pick up the click from the Leslie motor speed relay. I know I can buy a solid-state relay for around $100USD, but on albums from the 70s (before solid state relays were around (affordable) I've never once heard a click from the relay during speed changes.

Any suggestions?

I mic it about 4' out about 1/3 the distance from the top. Usually mono. For stereo I just put another mic on the other side. Any closer seems to pick up too much mechanical noise.

I haven't noticed this. If the click volume is constant (does it come up with the organ volume?) can you run it a little hotter to get the sig/noise up?

Now that you mention it, my 147 doesn't click when you change speed. The second motor just turns on and it speeds up.
