recording a large funk horn section

anyone done this?
I assume that there are some funk veterans on here, baby!

I am going to be doing a large session for fun and to get a group of guys together after years, and we'll be going from my Alesis 32 to my DAT recorder. Nothing really high tech in terms of the mixdown, but since I have never recorded a 7 piece horn section before, especially doing things like Maceo Parker (2% Jazz, 98% funky stuff!) and a lot of Jamiroquai.

I am kinda stuck between doing a mic for each piece...
Or doing a stereo setup...

Would I use large dia. or small dia. for this?

Which do you guys suggest?

I have the channels for either...

I wouldn't tight mic a 7 piece section. Maybe an X-Y set up. Ribbon mics would be cool. Something to experiment with would be to have the horns play into a wall and the mic the wall. I'm serious.

hey track rat

I am going to try the wall thing.

An obvious youngster question: When you say X-Y, you mean stereo pair, right?

thanks again trackrat.

how about using an X/Y stereo setup with two Neumann KSM184? I successfully use one of these mics for my tenor sax recordings. Sounds great.
