Recording a Bass played witha Pic

I'm a drummer first, guitar player next and when I track bass I play with a pic. I use Sonar and have a Johnson J-Station and have used the Jstation as a direct box and also used some bass heads with and without cabs...my issue is that when I go direct it's too "pic-y" and when I use bass head settings, it has a great fat tone but I lose per note deffinition. Any ideas?


My bass is a Jass Fretless copy with aftermarket active pickups

I had the same problem and solved it by using the neck pick up and running it through a compressor. I didnt have to 'attack' so hard with the pic and got a good 'Beatlesque' bass sound, without that picky sound. It actually sounded better than with fingers.
